Southampton vs Liverpool: Ryan Bertrand targeting Reds' weaknesses to derail title bid

Ryan Bertrand insists Southampton are looking to exploit Liverpool’s weaknesses when they face the title challengers on Friday.

Saints have won back-to-back matches under Ralph Hasenhuttl, but are not out of the relegation battle just yet, with five points separating them from Cardiff.

Liverpool’s dramatic win over Tottenham on Sunday took them back to the top of the table, but should Manchester City beat Cardiff on Wednesday, the Reds will be one point behind and require victory to reclaim top spot.

Bertrand insists Saints can cause a surprise though and wants to target Liverpool’s weak points.

“It’s always good to play against the best players. That is why you play and it’s the ultimate aim,” said Bertrand.

“I won’t change my preparations. I’m just looking forward to seeing his strengths and seeing his weaknesses and trying to nullify some and exploiting the others.”

Bertrand insists Saints need the points just as much as Jurgen Klopp’s side and can’t wait to play.

“It’s important for both teams,” Bertrand added. “They are fighting for the Premier League with a chance to create history for their first title in so long.

“Equally we need the points and are fighting for different reasons. It should be a nice competitive game and I’m really looking forward to it.”
