Southampton v Liverpool prediction: Big Virg can land a big priced first scorer bet

The turn-around is tight, their back up goalkeeper is carrying an injury but the Reds do have the feelgood factor from lifting another European trophy in Istanbul.

Can they maintain that momentum? Bookies thepools.com think so and make the Reds odds on favourites to triumph at St Mary's.

But if you're planning a punt make sure you read our betting preview by the man who will be following the Reds home and away this season, Paul Gorst .

Win, lose or draw?

I expect this will be another tight game where the Reds will have to dig deep. Liverpool to nick it 2-1 on the south coast. The Reds are 4/9 with thepools.com to win, but the 2-1 correct scoreline is a much more tempting 7/1 .

Who's a good bet for first scorer?

Mohamed Salah is the obvious choice seeing as he's taken over penalty duty from James Milner, and odds of 16/5 first scorer with thepools.com reflect this. But Virgil van Dijk's in good goalscoring form across the back end of last season and the start of this. Why not back the big Dutchman? He's a big-priced 16/1 first scorer and 11/2 any time.

Who's on the naughty step? (first card)

Fabinho is known to put his foot in a bit, but Oriol Romeu for the Saints is no shrinking violet, either. The two yellow cards the Reds collected on Wednesday were their first since the Champions League semi-final 2nd leg ... last season. Under Three cards is 10/11 with thepools.com .

Who's on pens?

Mo Salah has pinched it off James Milner. His last one in Madrid seemed to go OK, didn't it?

Will The Reds keep a clean sheet?

The best defence in the Premier League last season, the Reds will back themselves to shut out the Saints tomorrow. I think the home side might sneak one past deputy goalkeeper Adrian, however. Both Teams To Score is 4/5 .
