Southampton striker Danny Ings has tested positive for coronavirus, potentially ruling him out of his side’s Premier League trip to Leicester on Saturday.

Ings, 28, tested positive for Covid-19 last week, his coach Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed on Thursday.

The striker has been isolating since but could return to training on Friday.

Ings featured in the Saints’ 1-0 win against Liverpool on 4 January and Hasenhuttl confirmed in a virtual news on Thursday that the England international recorded a positive coronavirus test after the match.

“We’ve had one positive test since the Liverpool game, Danny Ings, so he’s been out for the past 10 days,” Hasenhuttl said.

“When you stick to the protocols, you minimise the risks and that’s what we’re continuing to do. I don’t know if Danny can come back [to training] tomorrow, but it looks like he’s out for the weekend.”

Last month, Hasenhuttl was forced to miss Southampton’s home game against West Ham in the top flight following a positive test result in his household.
