Southampton striker Che Adams taunts Fred after Manchester United own goal

Che Adams has poked fun at Manchester United's Fred after his own goal against Southampton.

After getting off to such a great start last week by hammering Leeds United 5-1, United lacked the same attacking verve and penetration on Sunday as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw on the South coast.

United were caught cold by the Saints' intense start and, despite having chances to score from several set-pieces, it was the home side who deservedly took the lead after half an hour.

The goal came after Bruno Fernandes was dispossessed on the ball - and arguably fouled in the process - and it was then played to Adams whose shot from the edge of the box just sneaked in past the diving David de Gea.

The Scotland international thought the goal was his and ran away celebrating, but it was subsequently awarded as a Fred own goal after a big deflection off the Brazilian's dangling leg directed it goalwards.

It would have been Adams' first goal of the season, after netting nine times in 36 games last season, and he seems a little disappointed to have it taken away as he aimed a dig at Fred after the match.

"I think they gave him [Fred] the goal because he doesn't score many," he said, as reported by the BBC.

"I'll take it [deflection] as an assist."

The irony, of course, is that Fred did actually find the back of the net in last week's victory over Leeds and currently has more goals to his name this season than Adams.

United were able to bring themselves level in the second-half after Mason Greenwood squeezed a shot beneath the goalkeeper following great work from Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

But a winner was not forthcoming as United lacked impetus in the attacking third, instead, it was the Saints who went closest to winning the game after Adam Armstrong went through on goal but De Gea did well to deny him.

Adams was pleased with the result and the way his side battled for a point.

"We dug in well and got the point. They are a top, top team but we battled well and got a deserved point.

"We had chances at the end to nick it ourselves but have to take the positives today and move on to next week.

"Adam Armstrong is hard to defend and I like playing with him."
