Southampton reject West Ham bid for Taylor Harwood-Bellis as Irons target new defender

Bid rejected: Taylor Harwood-Bellis - (London Standard)

West Ham have had a bid rejected by Southampton for Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

The Hammers are in the market for a new central defender as the January transfer deadline draws ever nearer.

Standard Sport understands that West Ham’s offer was strongly rejected by the Saints, with the fee only half of the Championship club’s valuation of the 24-year-old centre-back.

Talks are believed to have stalled, and Nuno Espirito Santo’s side could turn to other targets ahead of Deadline Day on Monday.

One of those names is Axel Disasi, the Chelsea defender.

The Frenchman had been frozen out by former manager Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge, but he has been brought in from the cold by new boss Liam Rosenior in recent weeks.

Despite his reintegration into first-team training, however, the Blues are still thought to want to sell the former Monaco man, who spent last season on loan at Aston Villa.

West Ham want to sign Disasi on loan, which has led to a pause in negotiations for the moment.

The east London club have been active in the transfer market this month, landing two strikers - Taty Castellanos and Pablo Felipe - as well as Keiber Lamadrid, the young forward, and Adama Traore, who joined this week from Fulham.

Traore reunites with his former boss Nuno, having played under the Portuguese at Wolves.

West Ham are battling relegation from the top flight, and are looking to bolster their squad in a bid to propel themselves away from the dreaded drop zone.

The Hammers are currently 18th in the table, five points from safety.
