Southampton rebuffed by Championship club as they eye up potential Danny Ings' alternative

Southampton are already looking to alternative options when it comes to Danny Ings.

News surfaced earlier this week that the Saints' main man rejected a new contract with the Premier League club.

Ings, 28, has been top scorer for Ralph Hassenhuttl's side for the last two years - he scored 12 last term and 22 the season prior.

But the offer of a lucrative four-year extension - a deal that would have made him their highest-paid player - was rebuffed.

Saints now face a dilemma as to whether to cash in on the England international or risk losing him for free next summer. To that end, it is perhaps no surprise to see them targeting other centre-forwards.

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, they have seen a bid for Championship hotshot Adam Armstrong turned down.

There is no indication of the value of the bid, but it is believed that Southampton are one of three top flight sides interested.

Armstrong was the second-highest goalscorer in the Championship last season. He notched 28 times in the second tier, with only Brentford's record-breaker Ivan Toney scoring more.

Armstrong, 24, is in a similar position to Ings in that he too has a year to run on his existing terms. He is said to have been offered a fresh contract by Rovers.

The Ewood Park side are said to be holding out for as much as £20m for Armstrong, who joined them for just £1.75m from Newcastle United three years ago.
