Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg explains agent decision amid Tottenham links

Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has explained his decision to change agents amid January links with Tottenham Hotspur.

The 24-year-old has just one year remaining on his contract at St Mary's and is yet to agree a new deal at the South coast club, with speculation claiming that Tottenham were among the clubs interested in the Danish international during the January transfer window.

However, football.london reported that a move that would see the player join Spurs during the winter window was unlikely, with the midfielder staying at the club for at least another six months.

But the player has now made a move that could increase speculation around his future by changing agents and joining with super agent Pini Zahavi.

Jose Mourinho: I have no complaints about my players

Speaking to Danish outlet BT , the player explained his decision.

“It’s all very simple. I ended my association with Søren Lerby around mid-December. Then I got the opportunity to work with Pini and took that opportunity," he said.

“I am very happy to have Pini on my team. I don’t need to introduce him. His story speaks for itself. He is the master of his profession.”

Earlier in the month, Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl gave an update on the player's situation.

"No news on this because there’s no speaking of any contracts before we have 36 points," he told the Daily Echo. "It was a good decision to do this because the main thing is playing better and investing more.

"The rest will come.

"He enjoys playing in the team at the moment, he sees we're in a good way and as a captain, he's responsible also.

"An important message for him also is that he sees we’re going in a clear direction as a club which is important for him."
