Southampton make 'Liverpool signing' joke with James Ward-Prowse

Southampton have aimed a playful dig at Liverpool in their latest kit launch video.

The Reds developed a reputation for signing players from St Mary’s, but have not bought anyone from the Saints since Virgil van Dijk in 2018.

Liverpool’s history of transfers with Southampton in recent history goes back to the summer of 2014 when the club signed three players from the Saints in one window.

Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana all arrived from the south coast that summer, with Nathaniel Clyne joining them a year later.

Then in 2016 Sadio Mane arrived, before Van Dijk followed suit around 18 months later.

In a kit launch video released on Thursday morning, Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse is asked by one of the actors in the video a question about the Reds.

“So, how come you haven’t had the call from Liverpool yet?”

Ward-Prowse, who did not answer the question, merely just shook his head and looked rather unimpressed.

Before the arrival of Lambert in 2014, the last player Liverpool signed from Southampton was Peter Crouch in 2005.

Danny Ings was the last player involved in a deal between the two clubs, with the striker leaving Anfield on loan in 2018 before the deal was made permanent a year later.
