Southampton handed double Leeds United injury boost but international duo miss out on reunion

Ralph Hasenhuttl is hoping to hope for two key injury boosts ahead of his Southampton side's clash against Leeds United on Tuesday evening.

Saints host Marcelo Bielsa's men in a 6pm kick-off on Tuesday looking to build on back-to-back home 3-1 victories over Crystal Palace and Fulham as they look to end their season on a high.

Leeds arrive on the south coast having lost just once in their last eight matches, with Saturday's 4-0 win at Burnley another high point of a fine return to the Premier League.

Speaking to the press on Monday morning, Hasenhuttl confirmed Ryan Bertrand Will Smallbone will miss out against the Whites, but was hopeful that two key first-teamers may be able to feature.

Jan Bednarek missed this weekend's win against Fulham after starting 41 straight games for Saints, but should be able to return, while former Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu, who hurt his ankle in February's 3-0 defeat at Elland Road, is also on the comeback trail.

"Oriol has an opportunity to play, I think," said the Austrian. "We must handle it carefully but I'd like to have him in the squad, even on the bench. We must have a look at how his body reacts after training today, then we can make a decision.

"Jan Bednarek has no problems anymore with his heel. He trained yesterday and is training today. He will be in the squad, yes."

"It feels good that all players are coming back and the fact that we don’t have any new injuries anymore, it definitely gives us more quality."

Striker Danny Ings is also available after his measured comeback from injury saw him play 60 minutes at the weekend.

“We must be careful after a long injury coming back is always difficult and we always have to pay attention because we don’t want to risk anything,” Hasenhuttl added.

Leeds will be without Robin Koch and Mateusz Klich, who Bielsa will not risk between now and the end of the season following their potential Euro 2020 involvement, while Helder Costa remains sidelined with a back issue.

Klich and Bednarek were both named in Poland's squad for this summer's rearranged Euro 2020 championship on Monday.
