Southampton dealt triple injury blow ahead of Liverpool as Hassenhuttl gives Danny Ings update

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl says both Nathan Redmond and Jannik Vestergaard are likely to miss Monday's visit from Liverpool with Alex McCarthy also having to self isolate.

The Reds travel to St Mary's aiming to put a three-point buffer between them and second-place Manchester United at the top of the Premier Leauge.

Liverpool will head there without long-term absentees Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk, while Joel Matip will also miss out with an adductor injury.

But Hasenhuttl says he will also be unable to call on the hamstrung Redmond and Vestergaard plus goalkeeper McCarthy who tested positive for covid as the champions visit the south coast.

"I think for [Redmond] and Jannik Vestergaard this will take a little bit longer [to return]," the Saints boss said.

"We will have a look. It may take two or three more weeks, I don't know. It will take a little bit longer though, I think."

"After the last round of tests, we have one positive case now with Alex McCarthy, so he's out for the game on Monday and maybe also the Shrewsbury game, as he has to self isolate for a period."

The Austrian coach will be able to name the influential Danny Ings in the team, though, after his comeback against West Ham on Tuesday.

Ings has flourished on the south coast since initially moving on loan from Liverpool in the summer of 2018, scoring 35 times in 74 Premier League games.

And the ex-Reds striker will be given the chance to add to that total when his former club arrive at St Mary's.

"So far I think he is okay," Hasenhuttl said. "He had a good start against West Ham with the goal, but it was offside a little bit.

"It is perfectly normal that he is not 100 per cent in the rhythm but it is important that the stays fit now.

"He has had a little bit of time to recover now ahead of a game against his former club, Liverpool."
