Southampton consider summer swoop for Rangers star Scott Arfield

Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield could be set for a quick return to the Premier League with Southampton this summer.

Arfield has been one of Rangers’ best players this season after joining from Burnley last summer and has helped Steven Gerrard enjoy an impressive first year at Ibrox.

But he has also caught the eye of Premier League clubs with Southampton checking on his progress as they look to strengthen their squad.

Southampton’s director of football operations Ross Wilson knows Arfield from their time together at Falkirk and would be keen on a £3million move.

Conor Coady reveals his plan to cure Wolves' post-Wembley hangover

Saints are anxious to avoid another battle against relegation trouble and will back manager Ralph Hasenhuttl with new signings this summer.

Hasenhuttl, meanwhile, feels his side remain "very hungry" as they hunt down the points needed to secure Premier League survival.

The Saints have delivered four wins from their past six matches to move within touching distance of safety.

However, following Cardiff's midweek victory over fellow relegation-battlers Brighton , Hasenhuttl knows there is still more work to be done.

Liverpool reveal Anfield changes to be made at end of season

"For sure we need more than 36 points," Hasenhuttl said as he prepared the squad for Saturday's trip to Newcastle .

"We are five points clear of Cardiff , three points clear of Brighton. But you see the result on Tuesday shows nobody gives up, there is no knockout for Cardiff, they are still alive.

"I expect them to fight very hard until the end. We have to do the same, and I can guarantee we will do.

"We have been speaking about the 40 points and therefore we need four more."
