Southampton boss gives update on Takumi Minamino talks with Liverpool

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl says he has had conversations with Liverpool over Takumi Minamino and his playing time.

The Japan international is currently out on loan with the Saints for the second half of the season, after leaving Anfield on deadline day.

Minamino was struggling for minutes on the pitch with the Reds, and Jurgen Klopp thought it best for the 26-year-old to get some valuable game time in the Premier League.

After starting out well with two goals in his first three appearances, he is yet to feature for Southampton for more than a month.

His last appearance came as a 65-minute cameo against Brighton in mid-March, with his last goal coming at home to Chelsea in February.

Despite his lack of playing time in recent weeks, Hasenhuttl insists Liverpool are happy with the way the forward is getting on at the south coast.

"We had communications this week, somebody here in our club to take a look at him, we discussed his position, discussed his development, and they were absolutely not unhappy," Hasenhuttl told Hampshire Live .

"He has got a lot of time to play so far.

"He's not had so much in the last two games, but I'm sure in the last six games he will also get chances to play.

"He is training well, he is a good part of the team, he is a professional player, good mentality, good character.

"I'm sure that he will get a lot more minutes to play until the end of the season and then we will look at what we do."

Hasenhuttl added: "When you see our shape, we are always very flexible and rotating a lot, so he can end up as a ten and he can end up as a striker.

"I think in both positions he is near the goal and he can attack. I think this is what he likes.

"We will hopefully bring him in a position where he can show his qualities, and everybody knows that he has quality in and around the box."
