Southampton boss describes the unforgettable experience of playing at the new Tottenham stadium

The moment has finally been. Spurs have had their first match at the new White Hart Lane and have completed the first of two test events.

Tottenham under-18s welcomed their Southampton counterparts to play in front of a limited capacity 28,987 crowd as football was played on the turf for the first time.

The Lilywhites came away with a 3-1 win and no doubt, an incredible experience.

Eventually the ground will hold 62,062 fans when it opens officially for the April 3 Premier League match against Crystal Palace.

The progress after months of delays has left everyone with a swell of optimism and even the Saints couldn't ignore the magnitude of the game despite their defeat.

Southampton under-18s coach Paul Hardyman explained it would be an unforgettable experience for his players despite the frustrations of their first half performance.

He told the club website: "We were very disappointed with the first-half. I think the boys were a little bit nervous, very nervous and that came out and in the second-half we were much better.

"I said to them at half-time we would score the next goal and we did. For the ten minutes after I thought we did really well, we created opportunities and their keeper has made three great saves to keep them in the lead.

"It’s a great experience for these lads playing here in such a fantastic stadium and it is lovely. Some of them might not ever play here again.

"It’s a day that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives but from a footballing point of view it is a little bit disappointing that we did concede two really poor goals we should have done better with.

"Playing in front of a crowd just gives them that little bit more of an edge that they’re going to need if they’re going to progress in their career.!
