Southampton boss celebrated Liverpool playing Super Cup extra-time - but not for reason you think

Liverpool beat Chelsea in the Super Cup after extra-time and penalties in Istanbul on Wednesday night.

The Reds will now travel home to face Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday back in the Premier League.

That gives Jurgen Klopp little more than 48 hours to give his players time to rest, recover and prepare for their match against the Saints.

After the European victory the German boss said Southampton would be "celebrating" Liverpool having to play 120 minutes against Chelsea.

In his pre-match press conference Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl said he was celebrating but only because it gave him "more pictures to show his players" before the European champions came to town.

"I heard the message from Jurgen that he thought we’d celebrate, I was happy that they were playing longer but this is because I have more pictures to show my players," he said.

"Last year Liverpool played 13 times in the week and in the 13 times they played at the weekend they won 11.

"This team has so much quality, but Jurgen puts out a little bit of an excuse for his players fitness but they have "such quality it is not a problem for them to come here and make a quality game.

"But this doesn’t interest me, we want to show a reaction (after losing 3-0 to Burnley) and we want to be more difficult to play against than last week.

"In modern football and with these big teams they get used to it.

"We’re at the beginning of the season and they won’t be tired.

"We are preparing for the best possible Liverpool team."
