Southampton’s Oriol Romeu admits that his side “are making so many mistakes” following back-to-back defeats against West Ham United and Manchester City.
The Spanish defensive midfielder has been thrust back into first-team action under new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. But Romeu believes that the squad is still coming to terms with the change of coach and is constantly looking to improve.
“The start has been great with those two amazing, and important, wins,” he said. “Then we took two defeats and we are facing another tough match but that’s part of this league and the process.
“We are still learning a lot and we are trying to get everything right.”
Hasenhuttl has highlighted his intense training methods and even described his drills as “mind blowing” for the players, who are still adapting to his unique style. Romeu, however, has been relishing the hectic festive period as it gives the team a chance to improve.
“We don’t mind playing one after the other because it makes us learn and practice everything,” Romeu added. “It’s good to transfer things on to the pitch.
“He is constantly correcting things and we are also making so many mistakes at the minute. That’s something you can’t do in this league.”
Southampton’s tough Christmas spell isn’t about to get any easier, as they look forward to a test against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
On the challenging fixture, Romeu said: “It will be a tough, tough match. They are a great team but it will be a nice challenge for us.
“We will need to put pressure on them and hopefully get opportunities right if we get our chances.”
