Southampton apologise to Manchester United fans as thousands are delayed entry to stadium

Southampton have taken to Twitter to apologise to home and away supporters who were left waiting to gain entry to St. Mary's following a technical issue with their turnstiles.

After 539 days since the Manchester United last played away, the club's admired away support were back following their club on the road on Sunday afternoon, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side took on Southampton.

The 1-1 draw at Goodison was the last time United had an away support when Bruno Fernandes scored a stunning equaliser in the game's dying embers. More than 17 months later, United went to Southampton, looking to equal Arsenal's record of 27 games unbeaten away from home.

United fans missed the trip down to the south coast last campaign, where an excellent brace by Edinson Cavani stole victory from the jaws of defeat, netting a brilliant winner in the 92nd minute.

Unfortunately, some match-goers missed the opening stages of the fixture today (Sunday) after a technical fault with the turnstiles meant fans were stranded outside the ground waiting for entry.

In a statement made on Twitter, Southampton stated: "We would like to apologise to fans attempting to gain entry to the stadium, and thank them for their patience."

"The club is dealing with a technical issue with its turnstiles and is aiming to resolve this as soon as possible."

Southampton have offered a full refund to every general admissions season ticket holder.

Some home fans were also affected by the issue, with fans waiting 10 to 15 minutes before they could take their seats.

United trailed 1-0 at half time after Fred was awarded the own goal when deflecting in Che Adams' Southampton strike.
