Southampton 3-1 West Ham: Hammers wait for FA Cup success goes on

West Ham failed to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals for the sixth year in a row after a 3-1 defeat to Southampton.

Ralph Hasenhuttl made nine changes to the visitors’ two and yet his side gave as good as they got during an entertaining, competitive first-half.

Jarrod Bowen and Adam Armstrong failed to test the goalkeepers in the limited opportunities presented to the two sets of attackers.

Saints left-back Romain Perraud decided to take it upon himself to force the issue, and did so in spectacular style. A powerful hit from the Frenchman, some 30 yards out, beat Alphonse Areola all ends up and nestled in the top corner.

The second-half started brightly for West Ham and Michail Antonio poked home a simple tap-in for the leveller after Willy Caballero made a hash of collecting a corner into the near-post.

But Southampton turned the tie back in their favour after Craig Dawson was judged to have fouled Armando Broja in the area by VAR. James Ward-Prowse stepped up to fire his spot-kick down the middle on 67 minutes.

Caballero produced a stunning reflex stop to prevent Dawson from heading in a late leveller before Broja raced up the other end for a stoppage-time sealer.

The draw for the quarter-final takes place on Thursday evening.
