South West's R rate second highest in country as Bristol sees big rise in Covid cases

The South West's R rate is the second highest in the country after Bristol has recorded big rises in daily Covid cases.

City leaders came together last week to urge people not to attend mass gatherings, including protests and raves amid increasing infection rates.

Since then, Extinction Rebellion hosted a four-day demonstration and a gathering of 100 people took place in Easton, when two people were stabbed.

The Government has today (September 4) released figures showing the South West's R rate stands at 0.8-1.1.

London is the only region with a higher rate, with 0.9-1.1.

If R is below one, it means the virus is shrinking because each carrier passes it, on average, to less than one other person.

And if it is above one, the virus is spreading exponentially because with each stage, it is carried by more people.

But the South West's numbers are too low for the R or growth rate to inform policy decisions, the Government says.

A further 15 patients were diagnosed with coronavirus yesterday in Bristol. This is one of the highest daily cases in two months.

In North Somerset seven more were recorded, taking the district's total up to 961.

While ten more patients tested positive for the virus in South Gloucestershire, which now has 852.
