South West's R rate is the lowest in England with cases shrinking by up 10 per cent a day

Covid infections are falling by up to 10 per cent every day in the South West - faster than any other region in England.

Our R rate - reproduction number - is estimated to between 0.5 to 0.8 - a drop from last Friday's 0.6 to 0.8.

The latest figure means on average every 10 people with Covid will infect between five and eight others.

The north-east and Yorkshire has the highest R rate in the country, with the number ranging from 0.7 to 0.9, while the UK's is 0.6 and 0.8.

Our growth rate is also the lowest in the country, with a range between -10 to -6 per cent, down from -8 to -5 per dent last week.

This means infections are falling between ten to six per cent every day.

The north-east and Yorkshire has the highest growth rate of -6 to -3 per cent, while the UK's is -7 and -4 per cent.

New estimates from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that around one in 270 people in private households in England had Covid-19 between February 28 and March 6 – the equivalent of 200,600 people.

This is down from around one in 220, or 248,100 people, for the period February 21 to 27.

It is the lowest figure since the week to September 24 when the estimate stood at one in 470, or 116,600 people.

However, the number of people infected in England is still high when compared to last summer. In the week to August 25 around one in 2,000 people had coronavirus.
