South West's R rate drops sharply - but is still above one

The South West's R rate has dramatically dropped this week- but still remains above one.

According to the latest data from Public Health England, our region's current R rate is 0.8 to 1.2.

This means every ten people with the virus will infect between eight to 12 others.

It marks a considerable decrease from last week's 1.3 to 1.5.

The growth rate has also changed, with the region currently seeing a growth rate of -4 to -2.

This means the virus could be shrinking between four per cent to two per cent every day.

England as a whole is currently experiencing an R value between 0.8 and 1.1.

It implies cases might no longer be growing exponentially as they fall away from a peak hit in mid-July.

This week's estimated R value range of 0.8 to 1.1, compares to 1.1 to 1.4 last Friday.

These estimates represent the transmission of COVID-19 2 to 3 weeks ago, due to the time delay between someone being infected, developing symptoms, and needing healthcare.

The current R rates by region in England are:

  • South East: 0.9 to 1.2
  • North East and Yorkshire: 0.7 to 1.0
  • North West: 0.7 to 1.0
  • Midlands: 0.8 to 1.1
  • East of England : 0.9 to 1.2
