South West's R falls significantly as UK's rate is below 1 for first time in three months

The South West's R has fallen significantly this week as the UK's rate drops below one for first time in three months.

The South East now has the highest R in the country of 1.0 to 1.2.

London, which will enter a Tier 2 next week, has the second-highest with 1.0 and 1.1

While our region, the Midlands and East of England all have an R of 0.9 to 1.1 - this compares to the South west's 1.0 and 1.3 last Friday.

It means, on average, every 10 infected people will pass Covid on to between 9 and 11 others.

UK-wide, the average R is now 0.9 to 1.0

Because the figures come with a time lag of up to three weeks, R-rate may already be below 0.9 in England but it hasn't yet shown up on the official figure.

Meanwhile, our region's growth rate stands at -2 to +2, this compares to last week's 1 to 4 per cent.

It means the virus is pretty stable in our city now, and might no longer be increasing.

The South East had the highest growth rate, with 0 to 3 per cent, meaning the virus could be rising by three per cent every day.

England comes out of its national lockdown next week and the government confirmed on Thursday that Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire will enter the toughest tier, level 3.

This means households are banned from mixing, except in limited circumstances such as parks.

Bars and restaurants would be limited to takeaway or delivery services and people would be advised to avoid travelling outside their area.

Most of the rest of the South West - including the rest of Gloucestershire and Somerset, plus all of Devon, Wiltshire and Dorset - will enter Tier 2, which means people can dine out, but only with members of their household. Sporting fans can also return to live matches, and Cheltenham Races looks set to go ahead.

Cornwall, however, is the only part of mainland England to be in Tier 1.
