South West coronavirus R rate is joint-highest in England

The South West's coronavirus infection rate is the joint-highest in the country as hospital admissions soar.

New data released by the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies shows our region's R number is now between 1.2 to 1.5, similar to last week's 1.1 to 1.5.

The North West has the same reproductive number - which measures the spread of the coronavirus - as our region.

This means every ten people with the virus could be spreading it to up to 15 others.

Every area in England currently has a reproductive number above one, which means the virus is spreading exponentially across the nation.

Our region's growth rate is also the joint-highest in England, with +4 to +7, this compares to +2 to +8 last Friday - and means the virus could be spreading by up to seven per cent every day.

Bristol, Gloucester and Sedgemoor have some of the highest Covid rates per 100,000 people, with 495.5, 453.8 and 399.4, respectively.

The data release comes as the number of people being admitted to hospitals and intensive care units continues to rise.

NHS England data shows that around one in five major hospital trusts in England had no spare adult critical care beds on January 10.

A record 4,134 hospital admissions of people with Covid-19 in England were reported for January 12, according to the latest figures from NHS England.

This is up 12% on the equivalent figure a week ago on January 5.
