South West coronavirus R number updated as UK cases surge

The South West's R number is believed to be as high as 1.4 as cases surge.

UK-wide, the R rate is 1.2 to 1.5, which means on average every 10 infected people will spread the virus to between 12 and 15 other people.

And the UK's growth rate is +4 per cent to +8 per cent – meaning the number of new cases is between 4 per cent and 8 per cent every day.

While the South West's R rate is 1.1 to 1.4, with a growth rate between 1 to 6 per cent.

London, Midlands, North East and Yorkshire and the North West, all have the same R rate which is between 1.2 to 1.5.

It's been a worrying week as the number of Covid cases have continued to rise.

According to Department of Health test data there were 6,634 new cases recorded across the UK on Thursday.

That is the largest daily count since the beginning of the pandemic.

Bristol mayor Marvin Rees has also warned 'we are already experiencing a second wave' as he urged people to follow the new government rules.

The fresh measures include 10pm closing times for pubs, restaurants and other hospitality venues in England from Thursday - with table service required by law.
