South Wales Police drop investigation into Neil McEvoy

An investigation into a Welsh MS who secretly recorded the Senedd's Standards Commissioner has been dropped by Police.

The inquiry was launched by South Wales Police after Neil McEvoy made the recording of Sir Roderick Evans.

The incident was referred to the police and resulted in a security sweep of Welsh Parliament's estate.

At the time Mr McEvoy said he recorded his own interviews with standards chief and left the device recording when he left the room.

Sir Roderick resigned but claimed what had been shared was out of context and misleading.

Following the Senedd withdrawing their complaint South Wales Police confirmed to WalesOnline it has now dropped the investigation.

Mr McEvoy MS, the leader of the Welsh Nationalist Party and ex Plaid Cymru AM, welcomed the decision.

He said: “This is the second time in nine months that the Senedd Commission has reported me to the police and on both occasions the investigations have been dropped; the first time by the police and now by the Commission themselves. I consider this to be nothing more than harassment of an elected politician.

"There are serious questions for very senior people to answer.

“The new acting Standards Commissioner has conceded that the complaints process in the Senedd is being abused for political purposes.

"It’s simply not fit-for-purpose and so we need wholesale reform. The investigations initiated by the former Standards Commissioner should now be dropped and his former investigations should be null and void. Not just for me, but for all MSs."
