South Wales Fire Service 'as ready as it can be' for no deal Brexit

South Wales Fire Service is “as ready as it can be” for a potential no-deal Brexit this October.

That was the reassurance given to members of the South Wales Fire Authority at its meeting in Llantrisant on Monday, July 29.

The UK is due to leave the European Union on October 31 and there is still a chance that it may do so without a deal.

Councillor Joel Williams of Cardiff said during a recent visit to south Wales the new Prime Minister Boris Johnson had told him he intends to take the UK out of the EU on October 31 with or without a deal.

Cllr Williams asked at the meeting if there was anything that was being done to support the service ahead of that date.

Richard Prendergast, director of technical services at the fire service, said they believed they had the right corporate measures in place with no operational changes anticipated.

Mr Prendergast said: “The impact is bigger for health in terms of the supply of medicines. We have very robust plans to deal with fuel disruption.

“There are other sectors of the economy which will be under far more pressure than us. We’re as ready as we can be.”

A spokeswoman for the service added: “Like many other organisations South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has been making necessary preparations for Brexit.

“These preparations have included an internal review of key areas most likely to be affected and also joint planning with our partners within local resilience forums .

“Whilst there is still no certainty on the terms of Brexit the service is confident that it has robust policies and procedures in place to ensure that service delivery to the public remains unaffected.”
