South Wales Echo letters: Thursday, June 20, 2019

Revelations are not a reason to legalise drugs

The recent shameful revelations of high-ranking government ministers taking illegal Class A drugs have again prompted the seriously half-witted in society to renew their senseless call to legalise substance abuse.

The perverted logic behind their stand is: “Because the police are not winning the war against drugs.” The police are also “not winning the war” against theft, violence, child abuse, rape and murder, but I haven’t heard any arguments for those to be legalised.

Lake is missing out on bus services

I read with interest the Echo report of June 15 about the £3.8m grant to Cardiff Bus for electric vehicles. It is good to learn that cleaner vehicles will soon be part of the fleet for our city.

It is a shame bus users in the Roath Park area will never get to enjoy using these buses as the 28 and 28A no longer travel along Lake Road West. Regrettably we were not lucky enough to be included in the £750,000 pot that was put aside to save six routes due to be axed.

Of course this also depended on the representations by councillors to Cardiff Bus. Councillor David Walker was proactive for Lisvane and the number 86 bus was saved as a result of his efforts.

The councillors in our ward have failed to achieve any positive result and have gone quiet on the matter. This means visitors to the lake no longer have access to a bus.

Getting together

I am holding a “Great Get Together” picnic on Saturday, June 22, in Whitchurch and all constituents are invited.

The event is one of many taking place in memory of Jo Cox MP and we will also be remembering a local hero, Rob Cooper, who was one of the Echo’s “Great Cardiffians”. He was a founder member of the community garden. Rob died in 2016 but a bench in the garden is dedicated to his memory.

It will take place in Whitchurch Community Garden, on Erw Las, from 12.30pm and anyone can come along for free – please bring a plate of food to share. Chairs or picnic rugs would be welcome too.

I firmly believe, as Jo Cox did, that we have more in common than divides us and it is important in these troubled times that we celebrate the good in our community. It’s also fitting we will remember Rob, a great friend as well as campaigner for the arts and on disability issues.

Never a bored moment rambling

I do not think there is any reason to complain about being bored here in South Wales.

While looking for work or setting up a business why not take up a hobby of some kind? The best things in life are free.

What better way to get out and about and meet new people than to start walking?

There are the Cardiff Ramblers who organise walks throughout South Wales. It is a great way to get fit, see the countryside and meet new friends for free. You can choose your level of walk according to the walk rating.

Obviously you need a good pair of walking boots and appropriate clothing. But once you have these this is a great hobby for all to enjoy. So no more complaints about being bored here in South Wales please.

Cardiff Ramblers – find us on the internet.
