South Tyneside sees rise in coronavirus cases as latest infection rates released

South Tyneside has been hit by one of the highest numbers of new coronavirus cases in the country over the last week.

A total of 62 new people were diagnosed with Covid-19 in the borough over the week leading up to August 29.

It puts the infection rate in the area at 41.1 per 100,000 - up from 11.9 per 100,000.

In Pendle, the worst affected part of England, 66 new cases were recorded in the seven days to August 29 - but this was at a much higher infection rate across the population, the equivalent of 71.7 per 100,000 people.

Meanwhile, 56 new cases were recorded in County Durham - but the higher population in the area means that's equivalent to a less-concerning 9.8 cases per-100,000.

The news come as parents across the region prepare to send their children back to school - with many nervous about safety in the classroom, according to a survey of our readers.

Here are the latest weekly rates for every part of the North East, compared to the previous week.

Data for the most recent three days (August 30-September 1) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.
