South Tyneside school honours England footballer Marcus Rashford with giant mural

A head teacher is paying tribute to campaigning footballer Marcus Rashford on Tyneside - with a giant mural in his school.

Hundreds of pupils at Hebburn Comprehensive School will be greeted by the impressive 27ft x 9ft artwork when they return to lessons next month.

It carries a quote from the England star: 'Just look at what we can achieve when we work together'.

Head teacher David Thompson asked teacher Dawn Turner to contact her friend, the artist Frank Styles, to carry out the work.

Frank came up with the design and spent several days spray painting it on the wall.

Mr Thompson is "absolutely delighted" with the "phenomenal" result.

"I can't wait for all pupils to see it on their return next month," he said.

"Marcus Rashford is someone I admire hugely. I felt compelled to write to him during the first lockdown to express my gratitude and admiration for the outstanding campaign and for his ongoing commitment to ending holiday hunger.

"It is important that children have positive role models and Marcus Rashford is an outstanding role model."

The school wanted to express their support for the "compassion and tenacity" which the Manchester United and England striker had shown.

"His campaign will make a huge difference to families across the country, particularly in the most deprived areas," added Mr Thompson.

"He is an inspiration. I know that he’s extremely busy, but if he does happen to see it, I hope he likes it!"

The South Tyneside school caters for around 700 boys and girls aged 11-16.

Frank, originally from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, moved to Sunderland in 2003, and his previous work includes iconic Sunderland footballers Jimmy Montgomery and Raich Carter.

He studied images of Rashford, 23, in action before he began work on the painting. And he is pleased with the result.

"They are very passionate about art at the school," he said.

"And this is right outside the art department.

"I think Marcus is a great guy. He uses his fame as a platform to do good. He came from a deprived background himself, and he is giving back to the community."
