South Tyneside coronavirus cases: Have your say amid lockdown warning

South Tyneside's sharp rise of coronavirus cases isn't enough to force a local lockdown - yet.

South Tyneside has one of the highest infection rates in England. There are more cases per head than areas - including swathes of Greater Manchester - which were recently plunged into local lockdown.

Officials are closely monitoring the spike, while implementing less severe measures to try to put the brakes on the soaring infection rate.

According to Thursday’s update of the rolling seven-day rate of new cases, South Tyneside's infection rate jumped to 51.7 per 100,000 people, with 78 new cases (up from 15.9 - 24 new cases - the week before).

Back on August 21, that figure stood at just 2.6 per 100,000 people.

Despite the warning, health officials are keen to not rush into an economically disastrous local lockdown.
