EYE ON AFRICA © FRANCE 24

South Sudan's Vice President Riek Machar has been ousted as head of his party and the national armed forces, according to party rivals. They say Machar was deposed following a three-day gathering of senior members of the Sudan People's Liberation Army-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO). Machar was a pivotal figure in South Sudan's descent into civil war in 2013 and his removal could upset the delicate post-conflict balance in the country.

Also in this edition, thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets in Ghana’s capital, calling for wide-ranging reforms under the banner #FixTheCountry. He has increasingly faced calls from demonstrators to help ease economic pressures made worse by the pandemic, while other complaints include unemployment, high living costs and corruption.

Finally, we take a look at one of South Africa's most unique phenomena; the annual "sardine run". Every winter, millions of sardines migrate along the country's east coast, chased by whales, dolphins, sharks and birds. They're not the only ones following the action wetsuit-clad spectators also turn out to get a glimpse of this spectacular marine sight.
