South Shields to see out summer with music, food and surfing at Autumn Beach Festival

Surfing, sand castle building and live music are all on the bill for South Shields' Autumn Beach Festival.

The free to attend end of summer celebration will be open on Saturday September 14 and Sunday September 15 on Sandhaven Beach.

Surfers are invited to take part in the festival's competition, with children's and teen's categories, as well as men's and women's open contests.

Each surfer gets a 20-30 minute heat, with a £10 refundable deposit charged to contestants. The money is returned on the day.

Winners can claim prizes  from Northern Dawn Surfboards  Alder Sportswear, South Shields Surf School, K&K Surfboards, Fitzroy Surf Co., Longsands Surf School and RSC - Redstar Clothing.

Musicians will play live on the beach from both days between 11am and 4pm.

Food stalls will be set up too.

A sand castle competition will take place on the Saturday, which is free to enter, although participants must bring their own buckets and spades.

On the Sunday, there will be a beach clean, with a fun run in the afternoon.

The festival will be open from 10am to 6pm on both days.
