South Shields to Pelaw Metro reopens with delays on first day

Tyne Wear Metro trains are running again between Pelaw and South Shields following a three-month engineering project.

It means the Metro service has been restored to parts of South Tyneside that have had no trains since early September.

Nexus tweeted: "We are pleased to confirm that Metro services will resume this morning between Pelaw and South Shields following the completion of the Metro Flow project. Thank you for your patience during this extended major closure."

Hebburn, Jarrow, Bede, Simonside, Tyne Dock, Chichester and South Shields stations have now all reopened, connecting Newcastle, North Tyneside and Gateshead to much of South Tyneside.

But there are no trains today between Pelaw and South Hylton, including all Sunderland stations, as that line is closed because Network Rail staff who operate signals on it are on strike.

Metro passengers boarding trains to and from South Shields on the first day since the track reopened were met with a familiar foe, delays.

A cracked track in the Gosforth area of Newcastle led to delays of up to 25 minutes across the Metro system

Nexus tweeted: "We are pleased to confirm that Metro services will resume this morning between Pelaw and South Shields following the completion of the Metro Flow project. Thank you for your patience during this extended major closure."

The Metro Flow project dualed a five-kilometer stretch of track and required new overhead lines to be installed. Its completion was delayed by more than a week. Nexus says the increased capacity allows up to 24,000 more passenger journeys every day.
