South Shields fire: People told to keep windows closed as building goes up in flames

Residents are being warned to close their doors and windows as emergency services deal with a large fire in South Shields.

Huge clouds of smoke can be seen billowing above properties on Wapping Street after the fire broke out on Thursday morning.

People have been urged to avoid the area, close to the South Tyneside Shields Ferry port, while the blaze is ongoing.

Three crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance and have asked people to stay safe while they extinguish the flames.

A spokesperson said: "We currently have crews from South Shields, Byker and Hebburn dealing with a fire on Wapping Street South Shields.

"Please avoid the area if possible and keep all doors and windows closed.

"More information will follow when available."
