South Queensferry locals turn High Street phone box into innovative 'essentials bank' for those in need

A local volunteer group in South Queensferry have come up with a unique venue for ensuring those in need can collect essential supplies during lockdown through a shiny red phone box.

As the lockdown in Edinburgh enters its fifth week, a local volunteer group was set up in the area to assist and help out residents who need it most during the coronavirus pandemic.

One project that was started by the 'Ferry Go-For' group was the reuse of a local phone box on the High Street in front of Roseberry Hall. Local volunteer Nicola Gourlay started the project by leaving a few essentials in the box alongside other items such as books and sweets, afterwards sharing the information round the local community.

As many households may struggle to get access to some essential store cupboard items, the phone box is a simple and innovative idea to bring the community together.

Local volunteer for Ferry Go-For, Emma Jane Taylor, said:

All items are asked to be wiped down before being placed in the box to prevent any spread of infection in the area.

"It’s a real show of community spirit and demonstrates how kind people in Queensferry are. There are things like pasta, tinned tomatoes, snacks etc in there and a good amount of books too."

Volunteers such as Emma have begun to share the phone box project on social media, and have since seen other donations from local residents in South Queensferry appear inside of it.

All items are asked to be wiped down before being placed in the box to prevent any spread of infection in the area.
