‘South Park’ takes aim at LeBron James for ‘financial, spiritual’ Daryl Morey quote

LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers are now less than five days away from the start of real basketball but for at least a little longer, the reverberations of LeBron James’ initial statements about Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey’s tweets about China and Hong Kong continue.

This time, the people who took issue with LeBron’s statement weren’t politicians or media members, but the comedians of “South Park.” “South Park,” who did an episode criticizing China only a few days before the NBA’s China episode took off, leading to a ban of South Park in China. In this week’s episode, Trey Parker and Matt Stone took aim at LeBron James.

The show creators had LeBron’s initial quote about the “financial and spiritual” implications of Morey’s tweet voiced by Eric Cartman.

“South Park” creators released a statement last week blasting the NBA for “embracing” Chinese censorship (via The Hollywood Reporter):

Like the NBA, we welcome the Chinese censors into our homes and into our hearts,” the statement reads. “We too love money more than freedom and democracy. Xi doesn’t look like Winnie the Pooh at all. Tune into our 300th episode this Wednesday at 10! Long live the great Communist Party of China. May the autumn’s sorghum harvest be bountiful. We good now China?

LeBron James is not expected to play tonight when the Los Angeles Lakers close out their preseason schedule in San Francisco against the Golden State Warriors.
