KOLHAPUR: Several parts of South Maharashtra and Konkan region received rainfall on Saturday night and early on Sunday.
The ghat sections of Kolhapur and Satara districts received around 15 mm of rainfall, while Sangli and Solapur received 27 mm and 23.8 mm, respectively.
The intensity of rainfall on Sunday was lower than on Saturday, but the showers were accompanied by thunder and lightning. In Kolhapur city, the sudden downpour caused clogging of the drains and overflowing of the nullahs. Waterlogging was also witnessed in the low-lying areas of the city.
As it was a Sunday, there were fewer people out on the roads, but the turnouts at the Mahalaxmi temple and Rankala lake were affected due to the incessant rainfall. Three incidents of tree uprooting and branch falling were reported in Kolhapur city. But as per the fire department of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) no loss of life or property was reported.
Mangoes to get expensive
The price of mangoes coming to the markets in Kolhapur and Sangli from Konkan was already on the higher side, but with the recent bouts of the rainfall, the prices are likely to go up further.
The fruits at the stage of harvesting have suffered damages. As a result, the price is likely to increase.
Currently, a dozen Devgad alphonso mangoes cost around Rs 900.
Infestation threat for crops
According to the agriculture officer, several recently sowed crops and fruit likes grapes that have started showing new outgrowths are susceptible to pest attack.
The new outgrowths are expected to be attacked by downy pest and thereby ultimately causing loss in productivity.
