South Leith Parish Church incident: Police continue to investigate after woman 'found in distress'

Police enquiries are ongoing today (Saturday) after a woman was found in distress at South Leith Parish Church.

Emergency services were called to the church and graveyard at around 5.30pm on Friday. This was after members of the public alerted officers on patrol to a woman in distress near the New Kirkgate entrance to the church grounds.

The area was cordoned off a short time later as police launched an investigation.

Police tape remained at the scene overnight before being removed earlier this morning, and Edinburgh Live was told today (Saturday) that officers are still trying to establish the full circumstances, and whether any criminality has taken place.

A spokesperson said: "At around 5.30pm, officers on patrol in Edinburgh were alerted to a woman in distress in the New Kirkgate area.

"Inquiries are ongoing in the area to establish the circumstances and whether any crime has taken place."
