South Lanarkshire records first COVID-19 death in three weeks

South Lanarkshire recorded a coronavirus death last week for the first time in three weeks.

Figures released by the National Records of Scotland today (Wednesday, July 29) revealed that there were eight Covid-related deaths across the country last week, including one in South Lanarkshire.

The death, which occurred in hospital, was the 315th across the region since the first was recorded in the week ending March 29.

Of those, 143 were in care homes, 142 were in hospital and 30 were in other settings including at home.

Last week was also the third consecutive week that one death where coronavirus was mentioned on the death certificate was recorded in North Lanarkshire.

In total, there have been 270 deaths where coronavirus was listed on the death certificate in North Lanarkshire. Of those, 95 were in care homes, 152 in hospital and 23 were in other settings including at home.

That takes the total number of coronavirus deaths in Lanarkshire to 585 as of Sunday, July 26.

Lanarkshire as a whole remains the second-worst affected health board in Scotland with 8.8 deaths for every 10,000 people, only Greater Glasgow and Clyde has seen a higher death rate (11.3).

Only Lothian (727) and Greater Glasgow and Clyde (1,333) have seen a higher number of coronavirus deaths than Lanarkshire although the death rate in Lothian is only 8.0 because of the bigger population.

Last week was the first in 13 weeks in which coronavirus deaths in Scotland increased. There were eight across the country bringing the total to 4,201.

More than three-quarters (77 per cent) were aged 75 or over while 47 per cent of deaths occurred in care homes.

The figures released by the National Records of Scotland include all deaths up to Sunday, July 26.
