South Lanarkshire primary school receives funding for a garden classroom

A new outdoor classroom for children has opened in Carstairs Junction Primary School.

The STEM garden facility, named by the pupils as The Four Seasons Classroom, was funded by Siemens Mobility and opened yesterday (March 22).

The classroom provides space for educational activity that will help pupils learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects, as well as the rail industry.

Head teacher, Jill Armour, said: “We were delighted to work with Siemens Mobility on this concept. Students will benefit from engaging in interactive activities for STEM subjects early on and develop their true interests.”

The classroom was developed by local small and medium-sized enterprises, which supported the local economy.

Campbell Braid, operations director Scotland, rail infrastructure for Siemens Mobility and signalling programme director, Signalling Collaborative Partnership, said: “As well as delivering this great new asset for the school, we were delighted to be able to support Scotland’s economy by contracting local SMEs to work on the construction.”

Carstairs Junction is a significant section of the West Coast Main Like – it links Glasgow and Edinburgh to London.

Siemens Mobility is eager to invest in the local area as it delivers the next stages of the signalling element within the Carstairs Modernisation project which is part of a multi-billion-pound investment by the Scottish Government to improve Scotland’s Railway.

The cost of the materials and construction was covered by Siemens Mobility.
