South Lanarkshire Covid cases rose by over 60 per cent in first week after Christmas

Coronavirus cases in South Lanarkshire increased by more than 60 per cent in the first week after Christmas.

Figures published by Public Health Scotland revealed there were 891 new cases of the virus between Sunday, December 27, and Saturday, January 2 - up from 552 in the previous week.

Case numbers in the region are at the highest in two months as 2.78 cases were recorded for every 1000 residents.

Last week, the Hamilton area saw the most cases at 281 while 242 positive tests were recorded in Rutherglen and Cambuslang.

Data for some neighbourhoods which saw less than three new Covid-19 cases last week in Clydesdale and East Kilbride and Avondale was suppressed, however there were at least 102 cases recorded in Clydesdale and 263 in East Kilbride and Avondale.

Rutherglen and Cambuslang had the highest rate of new cases last week 3.84 per 1000 residents while rates in Hamilton area (2.78), East Kilbride and Avondale (2.75-2.78) and Clydesdale (1.68-1.73) were lower.

Burnhill and Bankhead North was the region's coronavirus hotspot last week after 35 people in the neighbourhood tested positive for the virus.

That equates to 10.58 cases for every 1000 residents - almost double the rate of the second highest neighbourhood in South Lanarkshire.

Crosshouse and Lindsayfield (24), Glassford, Quarter and Allanton (24), Halfway, Hallside and Drumsagard (21), Little Earnock (29), Nerston and EK Landward area (27), Uddingston and Gardenside (24), Vicarland and Cairns (22) and Westburn and Newton (28) all recorded at least 20 new cases last week.

Biggar, Symington, Thankerton and Dolphinton saw the most new cases in Clydesdale last week at 15.
