South Lanarkshire councillors hold closed doors meeting to discuss coronavirus outbreak

Talks on the coronavirus outbreak were held behind closed doors last week.

South Lanarkshire councillors were given a private briefing on the situation after a meeting of the council’s social work committee on Wednesday, March 4.

Health and social  care director Val de  Souza updated councillors just hours after Scottish health minister Jeane Freeman confirmed two more cases of the virus.

It is understood the talks included the latest available information on the outbreak and the organisational response to the outbreak in South Lanarkshire .

More than 1000 people have been tested for the virus in Scotland, with the vast majority coming back negative.

The first of three positive tests was confirmed in Tayside  on Sunday, March 1,  with two further cases  n Ayrshire and Grampian revealed three days later. Currently 27 people in Scotland have tested positive for the illness.

Health professionals are working to contact anyone who has been  in close contact with people who have coronavirus, while  the UK’s chief medical officers have said there is a moderate risk to the public.

The latest NHS advice  to reduce the spread of the virus remains the same.

■ Wash your hands  with soap and water  often – do this for at least 20 seconds

■ Always wash your hands when you get home or into work

■ Use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

■ Cover your mouth  and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

■ Put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards

■ Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council said: “I can confirm that the committee was given an update on the position.”
