South Lanarkshire council shuts children's play areas and car parks as people continue to ignore lockdown rules

South Lanarkshire council has closed all children's play areas and car parks at several parks after people continued to flout social distancing rules over the weekend.

Families have been flocking to parks as the weather heats up ignoring Goverment lock down rules.

Current guidance allows for one form of exercise within walking distance of your home and driving is only for essential travel.

Chatelherault Country Park which was voted one of Scotland’s top parks and attracts over 200,000 visitors a year has been sealed off to everyone except those who live locally.

Calderglen Country Park, Lanark Loch and Racecourse, James Hamilton Heritage Park, and Castlebank Park have also now been sealed off to all except nearby residents.

The council say signage will be posted at all play parks and car parks after discussions with Police Scotland.

It comes as 222 people have now died from coronavirus in Scotland.

The number of confirmed cases rose to 3961 yesterday.

Cllr Lynsey Hamilton made the announcement on Facebook (Facebook)

Councillor Lynsey Hamilton said: "Due to non compliance with the social distancing rules South Lanarkshire Council have taken the decision to close all public play parks and the car parks at the following public parks.

"I know it is difficult at this time to stay in with your kids especially when the weather is nice however Staying in Saves Lives."."
