South Lanarkshire Council set to benefit from increased funding for new homes

South Lanarkshire Council will benefit from an increased budget to build affordable homes in the region.

The Scottish Government has confirmed they are increasing the allocation for council areas over the next five years to over £3.2bn, an increase of over 20 per cent from the previous five year sum.

As part of this, SLC is to receive almost £31m for the financial year, an increase on last year.

However, the news may concern campaigners in areas such as Cambuslang, where locals have argued for years that too many homes are being built without suitable facilities to match.

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey said she will continue to campaign for both affordable housing and other facilities.

She told Lanarkshire Live : “Over recent years, funding from the Scottish Government has been used in a number of local developments, including at Glenroyal Gardens in Rutherglen, housing at Whitlawburn, and the new project just off Gilbertfield Road in Cambuslang.

“We know good quality and affordable housing helps tackle child poverty, homelessness, and improves people’s experiences of living in the private and social rented sectors, so I welcome this new funding.

"As new homes are built, I'll continue to call for local amenities to be taken into account and, as is necessary for Cambuslang East, push for a new secondary school to be built."

The Scottish Government has delivered more than 102,000 affordable homes across Scotland since 2007, and they aim to deliver 100,000 affordable homes by 2032, with at least 70 per cent of these for social rent.
