Fines of more than £2500 have been handed out to careless drivers who park outside schools since 2016/17.
Figures released by South Lanarkshire Council showed 43 drivers had been issued penalty charge notices (PCN) for parking on zig zag lines outside four schools since then.
A PCN charge is issued at £60, but if it is paid within 14 days, is reduced to £30. Since 2016/17, total fines of £2580 have been racked up.
Last year, 15 drivers were fined, with the council collecting £390 from them – that’s one more than in 2017/18.
The council’s head of roads and transportation, Gordon Mackay, said: “Indiscriminate parking around schools makes the journey more dangerous as crossing between parked cars is more difficult, particularly for children.
“We are committed to doing everything in our power to improve road safety and reduce casualty numbers. Zig-zag lines outside school entrances are among a number of measures aimed at protecting young people on their journey to and from school.
“Parking restrictions and zig-zags ensure the kerbside is kept clear and improves visibility for drivers, pedestrians and, especially, children who may not easily see or be seen over parked cars.”
In total, South Lanarkshire Council received £1050 from the 43 PCNs issued, with a number of fines still outstanding.
