South Lanarkshire Council calls for respect after conducting graffiti clean-up

South Lanarkshire Council has called on residents to respect their surroundings, after carrying out a clean-up of a vandalised miners memorial.

Lanarkshire Live recently told how the Cambuslang plaque was spray painted over with the Irish flag, in the aftermath of the town's Summerfest gala day.

Council workers were able to clear up the mess within 24 hours, but have asked people to report any graffiti as soon as possible, to ensure action can be taken.

Some residents hit out at the amount of silly string that had been left lying around following the event, which the local authority admitted was an inevitable part of celebrations.

However, the council has clarified that its comment was only referring to silly string, and not the vandalised memorial.

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council said: "We were very disappointed to see this thoughtless graffiti appearing on the memorial to miners in Cambuslang.

"One of our team noticed this and removed it before it had been reported to us, but we would of course encourage people to report incidents like this to us as soon as possible.

"Our teams did remove all rubbish, including silly string, from the streets around Cambuslang following Summerfest.

"While we want everyone to have a great time and enjoy these community events, we would ask people to respect their surroundings.

“Graffiti in particular is anti-social behaviour and should not be tolerated. Offensive graffiti, including racist, sectarian or obscene in nature will be removed within 24 hours of us being notified."

Anyone who needs to report offensive graffiti should call 0303 123 1020 or go to the Council's website here.
