South Lanarkshire Council begin repairs on fire-hit block of flats

South Lanarkshire Council are moving to reassure tenants in a block of East Kilbride flats after a fire saw a family leap from a window.

The blaze at Denholm Green in The Murray on Sunday afternoon just after 2pm saw a large-scale emergency response.

Now the local authority are working alongside the police and the fire service as an investigation works into the cause of the blaze continue.

A JustGiving page has been set up for the mum - a staff nurse - and her two children injured fleeing the fire jumping from a second floor window.

The mum remains in hospital and the family friend and colleague who set up the page says she will need months of rehabilitation.

SLC - who have some tenants in the block affected - are now beginning repairs.

Cameron Mitchell, interim head of housing services, told Lanarkshire Live : “We are working closely with Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to ascertain the cause of the fire at Denholm Green.

“The block is mixed tenure, including a number of council tenants within the block.

"We can confirm that the fire took place within the common close area on the ground floor and action is being taken by the council, as factor, to clear the debris and carry out repairs.

“Officers are in the process of making contact with everyone in the block to offer reassurance.”

The police and fire service earlier confirmed that two people were taken to Wishaw General hospital following the blaze. Both say "enquiries are ongoing".

Police Scotland also confirmed that a 46-year-old man has been arrested in connection with possession of an offensive weapon.

Anyone with any information on the incident should contact police on 101.

Information can be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
