South Lanarkshire Council approve plans for rock climbing gym in Hamilton

Plans to open a new rock climbing gym in Hamilton have been given the green light.

The applicant, Mr Euan Wheatley, sought permission to change the former Argos retail unit in the Newcross Shopping Centre into an indoor climbing facility – the first of its kind in the town.

The submitted plans and supporting documents indicate that the new use will provide a range of rock-climbing walls and obstacles, with associated changing facilities and seating areas.

It is anticipated that three members of staff will operate the premises, and that the maximum capacity will be 170 people. The hours of operation look set to be 2pm to 10pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday.

No objections to the plans were received.

Officers decided to grant permission on the grounds that following a detailed assessment of the application, it was considered to be an appropriate form of development for the site, and complies with adopted local plan policy.

A report by council officers stated: “It will also represents investment in the town centre and will help diversify the range of services provided, proving potential for increased footfall and multi-trip shopping.

“The proposed change of use will have no significant adverse impact on residential or visual amenity.

“There are no additional material considerations which would justify refusing planning permission.”
