South Lanarkshire Council announce summer road works to tackle potholes

South Lanarkshire Council have announced a programme of works to tackle the area’s ailing roads network.

The East Kilbride News has been highlighting the shocking state of our roads as part of our ‘pothole patrol’ with locals flagging up plenty problem areas.

Now the local authority have announced a major overhaul, which started earlier this week on West Mains Road, from East Mains Road to the Queensway.

But, the improvements aren’t without cost, with all works requiring roads closures.

The work was planned to take place during the school summer holidays, when “traffic flows are significantly lighter.”

The first round of work is planned to end on July 12 before further work on Sunday, July 14 until July 21 on Eaglesham Road between Peel Road and the Police Training College.

Stewartfield Way between Kingsgate Retail Park and the Heritage Park roundabout will be under repair from Monday, July 22 to Friday, July 26.

Lindsayfield Road, between Greenhills Road and Lindsayfield Avenue is to be shut down from Monday, July 29 to Saturday, August 3.

Repairs will then take place in The Murray on the Murray Road and Westwood Road routes, between Owen Avenue and Melbourne Avenue from August 4 to August 10.

Finally, Strathaven will undergo some pothole fixes from August 12 to 18 on the A71 Darvel Road.

Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor John Anderson, said the work is “essential” to improve the road surfaces “on a longer-term basis.”

The East Kilbride Central South councillor states that these “can’t be carried out without some inconvenience to road users.”

He added: “We would ask that anyone travelling in any of the areas during the times mentioned pays particular attention to the diversion routes which will be clearly signposted.

“Every effort will be made to complete these improvements as early as possible to allow the roads to be reopened to traffic.”
