South Lanarkshire Council announce extension to recycling centre services

South Lanarkshire Council  have announced an extension to services at its recycling centres.

Tips - including the one in East Kilbride's College Milton - reopened at the beginning of the month with a raft of restrictions in place.

They were closed at the start of the lockdown after travelling to a dump was not classed as an 'essential journey'.

But from tomorrow, June 11,  local residents will be able to dispose of electrical waste and electronic items, and standard -sized vans , carrying household waste, will be permitted access on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Michael McGlynn, Executive Director of Community and Enterprise Resources, said: “I want to thank everyone for their patience as we have reintroduced these facilities, and the overwhelming majority of people using our centres have been very understanding and co-operative.

"With their help we have been able to get the service running again with minimal issues.

“With Viridor, who run five of our six centres, we have been listening to local people to find out what they want us to do next. So I am pleased to say that we are now in a position to extend the service further to permit disposal of electrical items.

“We will also allow vans two days a week to help people get rid of household waste including these items, which can be larger.

"We will now also allow two people from the same household to exit vehicles, but everyone must stay in their own bay to maintain physical distancing, and unfortunately staff cannot help with unloading.”

The changes mean that site users will still be directed to one bay with skips accepting three types of waste: black bag; flattened cardboard; and compostable garden waste.

In addition, a special bay will be available for waste electrical and electronic items, and site users will be directed to this by staff.

Items accepted include: kettles, hair dryers, toasters, lawnmowers, vacuum cleaners; white goods such as dishwashers, washing machines and TVs and monitors.

The centres are only for domestic waste and South Lanarkshire residents, so users should have ID showing their address and no trade waste is permitted.

Due to space restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 arrangements, no vans will be permitted that are bigger than Transit-sized, and no trailers will be allowed access.

Sites may be busy and residents should only visit if they need to and if they have no COVID-19 symptoms.

The council will continue to review arrangements in consultation with users, staff and Viridor.

It is anticipated that the next change will be to start accepting wood, including laminates, at which point the centres will stop accepting cardboard. However, please note that this further change is not being made at this time, and relevant dates will be publicised in advance.
