South Lanarkshire coronavirus cases fall by 15 per cent

New coronavirus cases in South Lanarkshire fell by 15 per cent last week despite an increase in Clydesdale.

However Rutherglen and Cambuslang remains at the epicentre of the crisis in South Lanarkshire after at least 126 cases were recorded last week - down 17 per cent.

That equates to between 2.07-2.1 cases for every 1000 residents.

The Hamilton area recorded more new cases than any other in South Lanarkshire.

Figures published by Public Health Scotland revealed there were 622 new cases of the virus between Sunday, January 24, and Saturday, January 30.

The number of new cases in the region is now at its lowest since Christmas with 1.94 new cases for every 1000 residents.

Last week was the third consecutive week that case numbers fell following a spike after Christmas and New Year.

Data for some neighbourhoods where less than three cases were recorded last week was suppressed by Public Health Scotland.

Clydesdale again saw an increase in cases last week largely due to a continued outbreak in Douglas, Coalburn and Rigside where 87 cases have been recorded in the last three weeks.

At least 99 new cases were recorded across the region last week, including 29 in Douglas, Coalburn and Rigside - more than any other neighbourhood in South Lanarkshire.

That equates to between 1.6-1.79 cases per 1000 residents in Clydesdale and 6.76 per 1000 in Douglas, Coalburn and Rigside - higher than any other neighbourhood in South Lanarkshire.

More new cases were recorded in the Hamilton area than anywhere else in South Lanarkshire last week after at least 203 positive tests were confirmed - down 18 per cent.

That equates to between 1.97-2.07 cases for every 1000 residents.

East Kilbride and Avondale saw the biggest fall in new Covid-19 cases last week with at least 178 recorded - down 22 per cent.

That equates to between 1.86-1.9 cases for every 1000 residents.
